“At
this point I feel a confession is necessary...” This
is how I started our outing this week. I feel
a confession is necessary because I have
been feeling a twinge of guilt about some of
my picks. Here’s why, there are many homegrown
places in Denton that I love and would like for
others to know about. So, my question to the
other three was: "Why are we going to these new
places that stink when we know about lots of
places
that rule?" Now at this point in the conversation
Russ and Kevin took great exception to my assertion
that all of our previous choices have stunk.
After some verbal sparking and back peddling,
I announced that our choice for the week would
be local Mexican
legend
Mi Casita at North Carroll and Oak (near the
square).
But,
I should begin in the beginning. Gloria and I
left from McConnell to pick up Kevin and Russ,
as
they were scattered on campus. When I approached
the Front Desk, I was sadly surprised to see that Gloria
was wearing a cape. Yes, you read correctly
- an honest to goodness blue sparkly cape.
Now
this
may not mean much to you,
but
SL4
has
had
many discussions
about cape wearing and the associated implications.
So I say, “Are you wearing a cape?” To
which Gloria replied, “Jessica Zetzman made
it for me in Middle School. Do you think I should
wear it?” “Yes, definitely.” I
replied, knowing that Russ and Kevin would not
be nearly as accepting of her new cape wearing
status as I was and effectively ensuring that I
would have an angle for today's article.
Mi
Casita’s food is a party
in your mouth.
Casita is run by Mama and
Papa Casita. (These are
not their actual names, but this is what I have
called them for the last 5 years.) They have great
breakfast tacos. These are not just scrambled eggs
and bacon in a tortilla. They lovingly craft a
taco filling that is bursting with flavor and character.
The chorizo is the most dangerous, as it is greasy
and spicy - give it a try, your GI track will thank
you. If you are weak stomached the potato is
the safest, mild flavor that will
not
disappoint. Mama and Papa make their own salsa
that is phenomenal.
Lunch
at Casita will please as well, most of the offerings
are highly recommended. Particularly,
I like the number 3 lunch special: 1 cheese enchilada,
1 beef taco, rice and beans -
it's about $4. For this outing, we
all choose to go with the Mi Casita nachos. Kevin,
Russ and I got the beef . Gloria
had chicken: "The chicken
could
have been
more fajita-like instead of regular-like." I
fear this negativity could be a result of her
bad inaugural cape wearing experience. In response
to Gloria's complaint, Kevin said: "you do realize
they have 2 types of chicken options... you can
order regular or fajita.. did you opt for the
regular?" Gloria fired back: "I paid for the
fajita action. I'll get the receipt and you
can scan it in for henry's review as evidence!!!"
<view the receipt to decide
for yourself>

Kevin
also said: "I've got to say a 5 - for some reason,
that
nacho plate was the best I've ever had
there.
It kept
me thinkin' about it all day long." That's
right Kevin, Mi Casita nachos are the gift
that keeping
giving all day long.
Back
to the issue at hand: The
Cape. Kevin and Russ
were in a state of shock that Gloria chose
to wear a cape to SL4 lunch. In fact, Kevin was
so embarrassed that he refused
to walk into Mi Casita at the same time as
Glo. Then, when we all went to sit on the patio,
Glo sat down next to
Kevin and Kevin immediately rose and went to the
other side of the table refusing to sit so close
to a “cape wearer.” To this painful
rejection, all Gloria could say was, “Jessica
Zetzman made it for me in Middle School.” So,
someone asked, "Did you know Jessica when
she was in Middle School?" "No, but it was predestined
from the begriming of time that I would wear this
cape." Gloria replied, with a determined look on
her face. About
the cape, Russ asked Gloria, “Do you have
one ring that rules them all?”
When
we returned to the hall Officer
Briggs of
the UNT Police department was amused in a law
enforcement sort of way to see Glo in the cape,
in fact he was heard saying
in
an interrogation voice: “That’s an
interesting cape.” The cape caper is still
unsettled the hearts and minds of the members
of SL4, who
knows what the future will hold. Tune in next week
to see what will happen when Glo gets to pick
again! Will she punish Kevin with a trip to a
dainty tea house? Who could know?
OK,
so I obviously highly recommend Mi Casita. The
hours are a little tricky. They are open for
breakfast and lunch everyday, but Sunday and they
are only open for dinner until 8pm on Fridays.
Mi,
Mi, Mi Casita. I live in Stillwater,OK now and there are 2 things
I miss the most from the Denton days. #2 on that list is friends.
#1 is Mi Casita. When I drive back into Denton I always try
and figure out the fastest way to Mi Casita from wherever I
am. Oh how my my mouth, my stomach, and my heart miss "2
chorizo and egg with cheese please". Oh how I hope heaven
is filled with Mi Casita's and it's streets are lined with the
juicys run-off from the chorizo. It sadens me to tell you that
some who use to be freinds of the Casita (Wiese and freinds)
are now enemies. Beware of their lies. Throw them out with the
cape.

"Very
much enjoyed your review of the famous Mi Casita. It appeared
that Gloria did not rate the food experience as highly as you
guys did. Maybe the cape hindered her tasting abilities. It
is hard to imagine what "Jessica in Middle School"
was thinking when that cape was created, or then again what
Gloria was thinking when she agreed to wear the cape. It was
a good thing Kevin had the sense to ward that cape off, he should
be glad she did not have the ring, no telling what effect that
would have had on the chicken."

"I
must confess, I travel all over the United States
and I have never tasted food quite as delectable
as what tickled my palate at Mi Casita. In my opinion,
you can gauge the quality of a restaurant by how
well you feel the next day. I was a changed man!
The chorizo sausage not only satisfied my taste
buds, it tested the patience of my digestive system.
Kevin and Henry hit the nail on the head. I too
give it 5 stars!"
